# GST Calculator

> Indifi's GST Calculator is a free online tool to compute the GST amount and net price for any product or service. Enter the product cost and applicable GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%) and instantly see the GST amount and net price. The calculator follows the standard Indian GST calculation formula.

## How the Calculator Works

**Inputs:**
- Cost of product or service (excluding GST)
- Applicable GST rate (%)

**Outputs:**
- GST amount
- Net price (cost + GST)

## What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax introduced by the Government of India in 2017, effective from **1 July 2017**. It replaced multiple pre-existing indirect taxes (VAT, service tax, excise duty, etc.) with a single unified taxation system. The objective was to declutter the tax system under the "One Nation, One Tax" initiative.

GST is a multi-stage, destination-based tax - calculated at each stage of production but ultimately borne by the end consumer. Taxes paid at earlier stages are credited (Input Tax Credit) so the final consumer effectively pays GST only on the value added across the supply chain.

## GST Tax Slab Structure

India's GST follows a 4-tier rate structure, plus 2 special rates:

| Slab | Items Covered (Examples) |
|---|---|
| **0%** | Basic agricultural products, PMJDY services |
| **0.25%** | Semi-precious and cut stones |
| **5%** | Mass-consumption items: mustard oil, spices, sugar, packaged tea |
| **12%** | Processed foods, butter, packaged foods |
| **18%** | Soaps, entertainment, movie theatres, most services |
| **28%** | Luxury items: cars, white goods, premium products (often with additional cess) |

Note: GST slab rates and category assignments are revised periodically by the GST Council. Verify the current rate for any specific product before relying on calculations.

## Four Components of GST

GST in India is split into four components depending on the nature of the transaction:

1. **CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax)** - Collected by the **central government** on intra-state transactions
2. **SGST (State Goods and Services Tax)** - Collected by the **state government** on intra-state transactions
3. **UTGST (Union Territory Goods and Services Tax)** - Collected by Union Territories on intra-UT transactions (in place of SGST)
4. **IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax)** - Collected by the **central government** on **inter-state transactions** (and imports)

For intra-state transactions: CGST + SGST (or UTGST) are levied at equal rates that together equal the total GST rate.

For inter-state transactions: IGST alone is levied at the full GST rate.

**Example:** A product with 18% GST sold within Maharashtra carries 9% CGST + 9% SGST. The same product sold from Maharashtra to Karnataka carries 18% IGST.

## GST Calculation Formula

The basic formula is straightforward:

```
GST Amount = (Cost of Product x GST Rate) / 100
Net Price = Cost of Product + GST Amount
```

## Worked Example

**Buying a car priced at INR 5,00,000 (cars are in the 28% slab):**

- GST Amount = (5,00,000 x 28) / 100 = **INR 1,40,000**
- Net Price = 5,00,000 + 1,40,000 = **INR 6,40,000**

(Note: Cars often have an additional GST Cess on top of the 28% GST. This example shows only the GST portion.)

## Reverse Calculation (Extract GST from Inclusive Price)

If you have the net price (GST inclusive) and need to find the GST and cost separately:

```
Cost of Product = Net Price / (1 + GST Rate/100)
GST Amount = Net Price - Cost of Product
```

**Example:** Net price INR 11,800 with 18% GST:
- Cost = 11,800 / 1.18 = **INR 10,000**
- GST Amount = 11,800 - 10,000 = **INR 1,800**

## Why GST Calculation Matters for Businesses

- **Pricing decisions** - Determine final customer-facing price after GST
- **Margin calculation** - Strip GST from sale price to compute true revenue
- **Input Tax Credit (ITC)** - Track GST paid on inputs to claim credit against output GST
- **GST return filing** - Compute correct GST liability for monthly/quarterly returns
- **Invoicing** - Generate compliant tax invoices with correct CGST/SGST/IGST split

## Benefits of GST System

Compared to the pre-2017 multi-tax regime, GST has:

- Simplified compliance with a single tax across India
- Removed cascading taxes (tax on tax)
- Enabled Input Tax Credit across the supply chain
- Created a uniform digital tax system through GSTN portal
- Improved logistics efficiency by removing inter-state checkpoints

## Common GST Calculation Scenarios

| Scenario | Approach |
|---|---|
| Selling at GST-exclusive price | Add GST: `Price + (Price x GST%)` |
| Selling at GST-inclusive price | Extract GST: `Price / (1 + GST%)` |
| Cross-state transaction | Use IGST at full GST rate |
| Within state | Split into CGST + SGST equally |
| Import | IGST applicable |
| Export | Zero-rated (no GST) |

## GST and MSME Loans

GST registration and timely return filing are core eligibility requirements for many Indifi business loan products. GST returns also serve as verifiable business income proof during loan underwriting, often eliminating the need for separate ITR submission for smaller loan amounts.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**When was GST introduced in India?**
GST was introduced on 1 July 2017.

0%, 0.25%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% are the primary slabs. Additional cess applies on some 28%-slab items like cars and tobacco.

**What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?**
CGST goes to the central government and SGST to the state government on intra-state transactions (split equally). IGST is collected by the central government on inter-state transactions.

**How is GST calculated on inter-state transactions?**
IGST is charged at the full GST rate. No CGST or SGST applies separately.

GST is calculated on the **transaction value** - typically the price at which the goods or services are sold.

**Do all businesses need GST registration?**
Businesses with annual turnover above the threshold (currently INR 40 lakhs for goods in most states, INR 20 lakhs for services) must register for GST. Threshold may vary; check the latest rules.
